December Meeting

Although attendance was slightly down this month, members more than made up for it by their enthusiasm for the speaker - or, rather, singer - Martyn Harrison. Taking as his theme "Royal Celebrations at the Proms", he managed to stretch the interpretation to include both "A Bicycle made for Two" and part of Dvorak's New World Symphony.  We were treated to Elgar, Arne, Abba, Rod Stewart, and Rodgers & Hammerstein.  Most of the songs were known to members, who joined in with brio and occasional swaying.  Had we had flags to hand, we would have waved them.  At the end of an exhilarating forty-five minutes, Mr Harrison was thanked by Lilian Pedrick.

After tea and mince pies, the Raffle was drawn and Birthday flowers were presented to three members, one of whom will shortly be celebrating her 90th birthday.  Then it was time for the judging of the competition, which was for a crown.  Martyn Harrison undertook this task and, from a selection of varied Royal headgear, chose the one created by Jean Mallett (pictures below).

As the meeting drew to its close, the President wished everyone a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

The first meeting of the new year will be on Wednesday 13 January at 2 pm.  Bob Harding-Jones will be revealing some "Confessions of a Speaker", the vote of thanks will be given by Belinda Murray, flowers for the President's table will be provided by Iris Marquet, and the competition will be for the Best Cracker Joke (so save all you get this Christmas).
