July meeting

Despite heat, rain and holidays, twenty-nine members made it to the July meeting.  They heard a very entertaining talk from Mr Brian Carline entitled An Amusing Account of Life in our Schools.  As well as being a teacher (now retired), Mr Carline had been a comedian in his early days and that grounding clearly influenced his fund of tales from the classroom, not to mention his excellent delivery.

Maintaining the classroom theme, the competition was for a school memento.  Entries ranged from items of school uniform to reports, certificates, photographs and prizes.  Mr Carline judged the competition and chose a school photograph, entered by Christine Dellow, as the winner (pictures above right and below).

After tea came the presentation of Birthday flowers, the drawing of the raffle, and the National Anthem.

Forthcoming Events:

The Book Group meets on Thursday 23 July at 2 pm.

No meeting in August, but an informal fish & chip lunch on Wednesday 5 August at 1 pm.  Tickets are £5 and can be booked by calling 01279 432233.

STRAWBERRY TEA

On the first of July, fifty members and friends gathered at the WI Hall to enjoy the annual Strawberry Tea.  As it also turned out to be the hottest July day on record, glasses of iced water went down a treat.

As well as the strawberries and cream, there were scones with strawberry jam and more cream, and of course cups of tea.  With a table quiz to keep people occupied when not eating, time passed very pleasantly.

Highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a cheque for £500 - representing the proceeds of the Charity Coffee Morning in May - to Action for Family Carers.  Emma Robinson accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity (picture left shows Emma receiving the cheque from Harlow WI President Diane Hatt).
